We’ve been busy gearing up for next weeks Women Deliver conference in DC, looking forward to interesting plenaries and presentations, as well as seeing new maternal health advocacy material such as the film Stories of Mothers Saved, by Christy Turlington.

New Maternal Mortality Estimates

New global maternal mortality estimates published by the Lancet this week show a substantial decrease in deaths, from 526,300 in 1980 to 342,900 in 2008.  The report also estimates that more than 50% of all maternal deaths in 2008 occurred in six countries: India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Building Capacity

We’ve got a busy spring speaking schedule coming up.  Over the next weeks, M4ID’s Mari Tikkanen will among others, be one of the 10 global experts speaking at IFC Online, predicted to be attended by 4,000 non-profit professionals worldwide.  Mari will be presenting on how to build an action-oriented online community.

Women Deliver 2010

Women Deliver has announced that the second conference will be held in Washington DC in 2010.  M4ID attended the first one in 2007 and is an avid supporter of the maternal health agenda.  We’re urging the conference organizers to include sessions on new information sharing and service provision solutions, especially mobile-based ones.
